Virtualisation
Virtualisation of server infrastructure has become one of the fastest evolving and exciting areas of IT development. There are many key drivers for the implementation of virtual infrastructure including:
- cost reduction through hardware rationalisation
- reduced energy consumption and a lower carbon footprint
- server and datacentre consolidation
- business continuity solutions & highly transportable environments
- migration of older systems and applications to new hardware platforms
Although IT.ally are vendor neutral, we consider VMware's range of products to be the industry leader and benchmark in this area due to their superior operability, functionality and cross-platform support.
Cost Savings
Virtualisation's main drivers are cost savings which can be realised from the smallest business to the largest datacentre. A 50 person services company may typically have ten or more servers running their infrastructure; each of these servers will be performing a role such as email, file & print, database or application server. Each of these servers will require a power supply, keyboard, video and mouse connectivity and a connection to the local area network; most servers will also be using only a fraction of their available resources.
